Harrogate BID’s Business Crime Officer recognised during Westminster debate

The work of Harrogate BID’s new Business Crime Officer has been highlighted in Parliament as an example of positive partnership working to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, praised the appointment of former police officer Paul Evans to the role during a Westminster Hall debate focused on tackling abuse towards people working in customer-facing roles.

The Business Crime Officer position was introduced by Harrogate BID earlier this year to provide dedicated support for town centre businesses, helping to address issues including retail crime and anti-social behaviour.

The role also strengthens communication between businesses, North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Council and other key partners.

During the debate, Mr Gordon highlighted the appointment as an example of organisations working together to better protect businesses and their staff.

The discussion also covered concerns around the impact of social media on anti-social behaviour, including incidents where shop workers and those in customer-facing roles are filmed and targeted for online content.

Speaking about the role, Tom Gordon MP said:

“No one should feel unsafe shopping or working on our high street. Paul’s 30 years of experience as a copper will be invaluable to the community.

“This is a positive partnership between the Council, North Yorkshire Police, BID, and local businesses.

“The creation of a Business Crime Officer is a great piece of joined-up thinking, connecting and sharing key information between these organisations.”

Paul joined Harrogate BID following a 30-year career in policing and now works closely with businesses across the town centre to provide advice, improve reporting, share intelligence and support efforts to reduce crime.

Harrogate BID continues to work alongside partners to create a safer and more welcoming town centre for businesses, residents and visitors.
